LanguageScreen: Evidence and Development

LanguageScreen draws upon decades of research into early language development led by Professor Charles Hulme at the University of Oxford. A study published in Language, Speech and Hearing Services in Schools reports the development and standardization of LanguageScreen.

Approximately 350,000 children were included in the standardisation of the assessment.
LanguageScreen was shown to give the best estimate of a child’s language level with good-to-excellent reliability.
LanguageScreen correlates well with much longer, well-standardised tests of language ability.

LanguageScreen has also been used to diagnose children requiring intervention in a number of independent trials and evaluations. This research showed:

LanguageScreen is effective in allowing staff to identify children with language difficulties.
Upon reassessment, LanguageScreen provides an accurate measure of the improvement in children’s language following delivery of the NELI intervention.
A 10 minute LanguageScreen assessment is as valid and reliable as longer assessments usually conducted by a Speech Language Therapist.
