As you approach the end of the first 10 weeks of the NELI intervention, it’s worthwhile taking a moment to review your next steps – which assessments to repeat, and what training to complete.
The information below references steps in the NELI Online Training Courses and NELI Support Hub, as well as the contents of your NELI Resource Pack(s). If you do not have access to the NELI online training or are missing anything from your pack, please contact us on [email protected] for assistance.
We hope that the NELI Teaching handbooks and the NELI online training provide you with all the tools you need to continue your NELI delivery to pupils throughout the 20-week programme.
If you have any questions, please contact us at [email protected] or post a message in one of the Comments sections on the NELI Support Hub or other Courses and our Mentors will be happy to help.
Repeat the Assessment of Narrative Speech and Grammar
Please repeat the ‘Assessment of Narrative Speech and Grammar’ (Part 1 Teaching Handbook, p.106-107) with each child in your NELI group, using the same three sequence picture card or personal event narrative prompt card as you used at the very start of the NELI intervention. This should take just 5 minutes or so for each child.
You will find the three-sequence picture story cards and personal event narrative prompt cardin your set of green flashcards. Some examples can be seen to the right and below.
Write down the child’s story (with no prompting), conduct the assessment and set three targets. Example targets might be “use of past tense”, “use of pronouns he, his, she, they etc”, “identify character in story”.
You can find useful demonstration videos of these narrative assessment sessions in the NELI Support Hub from Steps 1.12 to 1.16 alongside example completed assessment sheets. The assessment sheets can be downloaded here.
Step 1.17 of the NELI Support Hub (Effective record keeping – tracking progress and setting targets) is where you’ll find the Grammar toolkit and Narrative Assessment targets – in the Downloads section.
Repeating this assessment will give you a good indication of the improvements in each child’s language skills over the first part of the NELI intervention and help you set new narrative targets for the remaining programme.
You may also like to repeat the Attitude and Behaviour record sheet which can be found in the Part 1 Teaching Handbook (p. 108). This sheet can also be downloaded here.
There is no need to conduct the LanguageScreen assessments again at this stage. We recommend that you re-assess with LanguageScreen only at the end of the full 20-week NELI programme.
Complete the third NELI online training course
If you are delivering NELI for the first time, please remember that the third and final NELI course on FutureLearn – ‘NELI Course 3: Delivering Part 2 of the NELI Intervention’ should be completed before starting to deliver the second 10 weeks of the NELI intervention.
This course gives you the information needed to deliver the short, additional phonics element introduced into NELI sessions in the second 10 weeks.
Once you have completed all three NELI courses, you are a fully trained NELI practitioner. Please remember to download your certificates from https://www.futurelearn.com/yourachievements, as a permanent record of your achievements and as evidence of Continuing Professional Development.
If you want to refresh your knowledge of the NELI Online Training Courses, you are always welcome to log back into your FutureLearn account. All NELI courses will be available for you to review at any time.
The NELI Refresher Course is also available to all staff who have completed the NELI training. This course was created to ensure you can stay up-to-date with best practice and get a chance to reflect on your experiences with NELI so far.
The Refresher course will refresh your understanding of the most important elements of NELI, build on the experiences of the rest of the NELI community, sharing good practice and ideas, and answer any questions you might still have about how to deliver NELI.
